Canillas de Albaida

It is situated some 576 metres above sea level, between the Sierra de Tejeda and the Sierra de Almijara, in Malaga. Only three kilometres from Competa,

The village is a typical mountain village in aspect, and gets its main water supply from the rivers Turvilla and Cajules.

The Atalaya and Verde mountains (1256 metres and 1325 metres) dominate the wild landscape, home of eagles, wild boars and mountain goats, where unforgettable excursions can be made along innumerable tracks and paths.

There is a place known as the "Fabrica de luz" (the electricity factory) that has been prepared for campers, and provides what they need. The village originated in the 13th century (Albaida in arabic means white), and developed from the 17th century, when the hermitages of San Anton and Santa Ana were built (the views from Santa Ana are magnificent). Also the church of Nuestra Señora de la Expectacion that, together with an Arab stone bridge and a paved road of the same period in a place called Las Cuestas, are the most interesting historical-artistical features.

Typical local dishes are the "potaje de hinojos" (fennel soup), cold almond and garlic soup (the famous "ajo blanco") and fried pumpkin.

There are also special sweetmeats eaten on the feastdays of San Anton (2nd and 3rd Sunday in January), San Juan (24th June) and Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), who is worshipped on the Sunday nearest to 7th October.
